The overarching theme to Sustainability is the interdependence of Planet Earth and its Environment to Humankind’s interconnectedness - the protection of all resources, species, plants and the atmosphere.
Sustainability is an organizing principle that ties together the Earth’s natural systems and finite resources for protection, with shared-considerations between social, political and economic development.
Currently the world’s average weather conditions – including temperature, precipitation and wind are changing, and this Climate Change is the direct result of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, significantly Carbon Dioxide (CO2), now trapped in the atmosphere, and causing global warming.
In December 2015, 195 nations signed the legally binding Paris Agreement to fight Climate Change; with the aim this century to help the world abandon burning fossil fuels – oil, gas and coal - and specifically halt global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, and if possible below 1.5 degrees - thereby initiating a change of energy use to a power-mix which is clean, affordable and reliable – alternative energies and future energies!
Sustainability is now a strategic business consideration to be integrated into the business model. The policy objectives and practice outcomes are often similar, and most noticeably will revolve around regulatory accountability for the effects of energy usage, with an ultimate goal to decarbonize economies.
Global ‘stakeholders’ also evaluate other issues to be considered socially and environmentally responsible – such as scarcity of water – to demonstrate Sustainability Values and to be included in “operational accountability”, and these customer opinions and purchasing habits can now directly effect company competitiveness.
The response to Climate Change and Sustainability can be viewed through a lens of both risk and opportunity – new business models can be implemented with revised operational processes. Changes and costs need to be analysed for both the long-term and short-term: the overall benefits are recognized as both achievable and essential, to mitigate the effects of Climate Change.
Sustainability Performance is dictated by many individual variables, such as operational sector and related supply-chains - InterSustain intervenes with all size organizations providing Transformation, Services and Skills.
